A Staggering Work of Heartbreaking Genius

Korean Drummer

Bear witness to the drummer of a Korean wedding band as he reaches unimagined heights of personal expression.

Around the two-and-a-half minute mark, this unabashed poet will leap past your heart and begin speaking directly to your soul.

Praise him.

Front man A. C. Newman told the audience that the band had been scheduled to perform for a TV show in Europe and asked to cover a “classic rock” song. This is what he came up with.

You can see almost every member of the band in this clip (except for Dan Bejar, who wasn’t there, and Blaine Thurier, who’s out of frame to the left) — A. C. Newman and Neko Case are up front, center; Kathryn Calder and John Collins are to the right; and Todd Fancey and Kurt Dahle are in the back.

Neko has a laugh at one point, though their faces are a bit hard to see in the hot lights. They really seemed to enjoy playing this song.

Can’t Get Me No

Devo Unsatisfied

Here’s something I haven’t heard in a long while. Devo’s great cover of the Rolling Stone’s “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” from an old appearance on Saturday Night Live.

Maybe this song lends itself to worthy reinterpretations. I remember seeing P. J. Harvey live at a small bar in the East Village a number of years ago, and she did a very good solo-version of the song. There’s also Otis Redding’s soulful take on it and Cat Power’s drastic deconstruction on The Covers Record. Any one else know a good version of this classic?

Check it out on YouTube before it’s taken down like all the rest.
