MUJI (non)Logo

Well, not exactly, but Japan’s so-called no-brand brand store, MUJI, has finally made the move to New York.

The smaller SoHo store opened last Friday. The NYC flagship location will be in the not-yet-completed New York Times building, near Times Square, and will probably open up some time in 2008.

Head there soon for your very own cardboard speakers and other tan, acrylic and aluminum sundries!

Soviet Sputnik Poster

I just had to post another Sputnik picture when I saw this beauty at what is currently one of my favorite picture-blogs — A Soviet Poster A Day.

Glory to the Soviet Science!

Many more striking, and historically interesting, posters can be found at ASPAD. Take a look for yourself.

Can’t Get Me No

Devo Unsatisfied

Here’s something I haven’t heard in a long while. Devo’s great cover of the Rolling Stone’s “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” from an old appearance on Saturday Night Live.

Maybe this song lends itself to worthy reinterpretations. I remember seeing P. J. Harvey live at a small bar in the East Village a number of years ago, and she did a very good solo-version of the song. There’s also Otis Redding’s soulful take on it and Cat Power’s drastic deconstruction on The Covers Record. Any one else know a good version of this classic?

Check it out on YouTube before it’s taken down like all the rest.

My Life with Blue Hair

Percentage of Life with Blue Hair

It’s true. At one point in my adult life, I dyed my hair blue. This graph should put the incident in perspective.

*These personal pie charts represent estimates and are only as accurate as is possible, given my poor powers of recall. They illustrate the “official numbers” on a given subject, as of the date of the post. Enjoy.

Sputnik, Sweetheart

Sputnik in the NYT

Happy anniversary, Sputnik. Has it really been half a century?

A few days ago, the New York Times Science section was devoted entirely to space travel in honor of the heavenly traveling companion’s 50th. The beautiful interactive-graphics and other multimedia content (like an mp3 of the “sound of the Sputnik”) are reason enough to grab a look before it’s all taken down, but there are also some interesting speculations about the future of space travel that are worth reading.

Run, don’t walk.
